The purpose of your Curriculum Vitae (CV) and covering letter is to present yourself in such a way that prospective employers will want to meet you. Our experienced consultants can advise you on preparing your CV to maximise its impact.
Your priority is to effectively communicate your credibility as an applicant and your suitability for the role. Presentation is the key. Recruiters are looking for well laid out, easy to read and punchy documents containing factual and relevant information.
Below are some basic rules of thumb.
- Always enclose your CV with a covering letter. Tailor the covering letter to draw attention to your relevant strengths
- Limit your CV to a maximum of three pages
- It must be clear and concise
- Write in the 3rd person and in note format. Make sure it is not too text heavy, leave white space to emphasise where one subject area finishes and another begins
- State your full name and address, marital status and number of dependents
- Briefly outline your leisure interests
- List your computer and software experience
- List your educational qualifications and accreditation for most recent qualifications
- List professional qualifications. There is no need to list stages unless you are part qualified
- Describe your work experience in reverse chronological order; cover the last two positions in greater detail
- Allow one separate paragraph per position
- State clearly the date, position and company name and location
- State the size and nature of the company and to whom you reported, followed by your responsibilities and achievements
- When responding to an advert, look for clues about what specific information on experience and skills to include
- Check all details carefully for any grammatical or spelling errors
