"They called us the unsung heroes !

Well not that night.

The awards evening was great with easy going people to chat with and share life and business experiences with. For me, it was one of the most enjoyable black tie functions that I have attended. If I arrived with some doubt, I had no doubt after a short time of being there that this was going to be a great night. The evening was a big credit to the sponsors.

The winning was not everything to me, although a shock and an amazing feeling when I did win. Most FDs are expected to do what they need to do through the good, the bad and the ugly for most of us we accept that as being part of our profession and we just get on with it and steer our companies in the right direction. We don't spend our time looking for a pat on the back, but to be nominated is just that, A REALLY BIG PAT ON THE BACK.

For a panel of professional successful individuals to come along and consider us worthy to have our own award is an accolade in itself, to win is a credit to my team and mentors that have supported me over many years.

A truly great experience !"

Jane Jackson – Finance Director Izziwotnot (Winner under £25 million category)

"I found the FDOY meeting very professional and rewarding as it was nice to take a moment to step back and look at everything we have achieved. It was a fabulous process, a great evening and it did get much more PR than expected for the business."

Ben Whawell, Group Finance Director, Stobarts Group PLC (Winner PLC category)

"The process last year was from my perspective a very easy one which belied the amount of work the panel were clearly putting in behind the scenes. Arrangements were easy, interviews friendly and non threatening. The actual evening itself went very well indeed and all around me enjoyed it.

The actual awards themselves were well received especially as Accountants do not often get that sort of recognition. What I found particularly pleasing was the pleasure that my overall company took in the award. With geographically diverse locations such as Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan, Canada, Moscow, Johannesburg, Brazil as well as Europe each Finance Team especially but also more generally were pleased about the award as they all felt it gave the company recognition as a whole."

Christopher Fisher, Finance Director, Stewart Group (Winner under £50 million category)

"It is not very often that you get a chance to review what you have done and not just what has happened with the business. The FD awards gave a great chance to talk about what has gone well (and what hasn't). The interview process was well run with a good opportunity to talk about what motivates and drives you. I actually really enjoyed the interview, even though it was like getting ready for a job interview! The evening itself was really well organised and the location at the Lowry suited the awards. Winning was very much a surprise and directly off the back of it put Norkem's name forward, with articles in several newspapers and business magazines. Good luck to all of this year’s candidates."

David Robinson, Financial Director, Norkem Limited (Winner Young FD of the Year category)

"The selection process was thoughtful professional and extremely constructive.
The judges were experienced business people from a wide range of backgrounds which led to a more incisive interviews. Overall I thought it was an excellent process and long may it continue."

Tim Kowalski, Group Finance Director, Homeform Group UK (Winner over £50 million catgory)
